On January 4, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) began implementing its radio frequency identification device (RFID) project amid strong objections from various transport groups, lawmakers, human rights advocates, and others. Initially scheduled for implementation last October, the project installs RFID tags or embedded microchips during car registration that allow transport authorities to track passenger vehicles and gain quick access to owner and vehicle information. Critics of the project contend that the necessary public consultations were never carried out and that the technology represents a clear violation of privacy.
The vehicle RFID project aims to streamline traffic rules enforcement in the country. Under the scheme, all motorized vehicles are required to install RFID tags that, when scanned by a government device, communicate the owner’s name, last registration date, traffic violation history, engine number, chassis number, plate number......
