Ongoing Food Safety Concerns

Even as China undergoes major socio-economic transformations, the emerging world superpower still struggles with a seemingly basic concern: food safety. China’s problems with food safety remain hard to solve precisely because of the ever increasing drive to reap more profit, even when it means employing unethical or unsafe business practices. Compounding the problem is China’s inadequate regulatory regime. According to official figures, China has 220,000 quality officers nationwide. This means every officer is responsible for approximately 6,000 people. Aside from ensuring safe food production, officer responsibilities include other major initiatives such as border inspections and the implementation of quarantines. At some local stations, multiple officers share a single computer and are forced to oversee more than 200 enterprises. ...
