In the dizzying atmosphere of China’s rapid economic growth, even the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has dedicated itself commercially. The PLA is the Communist Party’s military arm under the control of the Central Military Commission (CMC). Although the prevailing trend over the course of the past decade has been the professionalization and modernization of the PLA through an expanding military budget, units of the PLA continue to run farms, factories, banks, mines, hotels, and brothels, as well as major trading companies.
